Got a Tip?

Kendrick Lamar, Beyonce & Sabrina Carpenter Top 2025 Grammy Awards Winners

The 2025 Grammy Awards kicked off with an all-star band rendition of “I Love L.A.” Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars covered “California Dreamin’,” but the night’s standout performers were Doechii, Raye, Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan. And, in a pop culture moment, Taylor Swift presented Best Country Album to Beyonce for “Cowboy Carter.” For the most part, the 13,000 Recording Academy members spread the love. The big winner of the night was arguably Kendrick Lamar who won 5 Grammys including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Music Video, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap Performance.

After winning a record 32 Grammy Awards and missing out on masterpieces such as “Lemonade” and “Reinassance,” Beyonce finally won Album of the Year for “Cowboy Carter.” She also won Best Country Album for “Carter” and Best Country Duo/Group Performance with Miley Cyrus for their song “II Most Wanted.” That win was also the first Country category win for Cyrus, who started her career in that genre.

Beyonce’s Best Album win was the first for a Black woman since “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” by Lauryn Hill won in 1999, 26 years ago.

Charli XCX won three Grammys including Dance Pop Recording for “Von Dutch,” Dance/Electronic Album for “Brat” and Packaging for “Brat.” Carpenter took Best Pop Vocal Album for “Short n’ Sweet” and Pop Solo Performance for “Espresso.” In a very deserved surprise, Doechii won Best Rap Album.

As other awards shows have been strangely quiet politically, the women at the Grammys weren’t having it. In accepting Best New Artist, Roan made an impassioned speech demanding a livable wage for up-and-coming artists. In accepting the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Lady Gaga noted, “Trans people are not invisible. Trans people deserve love. The Queer community deserves to be lifted up. Music is love.” Shakira noted after her win, “I want to dedicate this award to all my immigrant brothers and sisters in this country. You are loved, you are worth it, and I will always fight with you.” Accepting an honorary Grammy, Alicia Keys remarked, “This is not the time to shut down the diversity of voices. DEI is not a threat, it’s a gift. And the more voices, the more powerful the sound. When destructive forces try to burn us down we rise from the ashes like a phoenix.”

Cynthia Erivio performed “Fly Me To The Moon” in a tribute to the recently passed Quincy Jones which also included Lainey Wilson. Stevie Wonder and Janelle Monae. Will Smith was also on hand to present the performance so, apparently, he is forgiven by everyone but Chris Rock and The Academy.

Best Film in Music went to “American Sympony,” and Best Song Written for Visual Media went to “It Never Went Away” From “American Sympony,” written by Jon Batiste and Dan Wilson. These are Batiste’s fourth and fifth Grammy wins so far. Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media went to “Maestro: Music by Leonard Bernstein,” London Symphony Orchestra, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and Bradley Cooper. This is Cooper’s second Grammy win. Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media (Includes Film and Television) went to Hans Zimmer for “Dune: Part Two,” a composition that was disqualified for Academy Award consideration because it was too similar to the original “Dune” score.
