Here’s a first look clip from Tom Hooper’s shotgun Oscar front-runner “The King’s Speech,” the story behind the man who eventually rises to become King George VI.
Starring Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, Helena Bonham Carter and Guy Pearce, the film is catalyzed by the abdication of King Edward VIII — a tale that will be explored in greater detail by Madonna in her own upcoming royal family flavored feature “W.E.” — with his younger brother (Firth) deemed unfit to take over due to a stutter. He then acquires the assistance of an unconventional Australian speech therapist (Rush) with their relationship driving much of the narrative.
The film debuted at Telluride this year to a barn-burning reception; it seems to be the only one that got a standing ovation throughout the fest. The dynamic acting duo of Firth and Rush sound like they’ve hit it off as well with “exceptional performances,” and “amazing, impeccable chemistry together” seen briefly in this clip; which also features Bonham Carter who, in recent times, has been somewhat forgotten about as a quality thespian.
“The King’s Speech” hits theaters November 26th via the Weinstein Company. Hopefully they don’t flub the Oscar campaign like they did, “A Single Man.” [BFI LFF].
