Yesterday we got the first look at Johnny Depp as we’ve grown accustomed to him in the past decade, playing dress up in "Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales." Even when he’s not headlining franchise material, he’ll find ways to get frisky like in the box office bomb "Mortedcai" or attempt to play serious like in the other box office bomb "Transcendence." But can "Black Mass" be the turnaround we’ve been waiting for ages? Fingers crossed.
Certainly this first image is compelling. No wacky costumes or funny facial expressions here. Instead, the actor is going gritty as Whitey Bulger, the famed Boston mobster who inspired Jack Nicholson‘s turn in Martin Scorsese‘s "The Departed." Bulger, who was apprehended in 2011 after two decades on the lam, was one mean s.o.b. in his prime. “He could be charming. He could be ruthless. He was like a cobra —you never knew where he could strike,” director Scott Cooper told EW. Let’s hope Depp’s performance can bring that out.
"Black Mass" arrives on September 18th. You can see them below.
