‘Project Hail Mary’ Trailer: Ryan Gosling & Sandra Hüller Star In Thrilling Space Survival Pic Coming March 20

It feels like ages since it was first announced that directing duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller would be returning to the world of sci-fi with an adaptation of the Andy Weir novel “Project Hail Mary,” after their ouster on “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” and there is now a first-look trailer coming from Amazon MGM Studios (distributed by Sony Pictures International in other markets) with a release date set for next March.

Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”), Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy Of A Fall,” “Zone of Interest”), former Squirrel Girl actress Milana Vayntrub (“Werewolves Within”), Lionel Boyce (“The Bear”), and Ken Leung (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “Industry”) make up the cast with a script penned by screenwriter Drew Goddard, who previously adapted Weir’s Mars-set novel “The Martian” for Ridley Scott.

The sci-fi thriller is another space survival story, but Gosling’s Ryland Grace is on a mission to learn why the sun is dying out (taking a page from Danny Boyle and Alex Garland‘s underrated “Sunshine“). As with other space movies, things don’t always go as planned, and the Earth needs the mission to be successful if it is to survive.

An official synopsis of “Project Hail Mary” courtesy of Amazon:

Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.

Casually known as Lord/Miller (“21 Jump Street”), the two filmmakers have been busy helping Sony with their animated “Spider-Verse” trilogy, earning an Oscar statue when “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse” won Best Animated Feature back in 2019 and are also involved with “Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse” alongside the upcoming Nicolas Cage streaming superhero series “Spider Noir.”
