'Won't You Be My Neighbor?' Trailer: Mister Rogers Says That Love Is At The Root Of Everything

“It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood, a beautiful day for a neighbor, would you be mine? Won’t you be my neighbor?”

If you were a child at any time between 1968 and 2001, you likely recognize the lyrics above and likely know who Mister Rogers is. For those of you who don’t recognize the name, Mr. Fred Rogers was the creator and star of the children’s show “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.”

“Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” was a “television visit” between the host and his young viewers that aired on PBS for decades. The children’s show focused on helping children learn about themselves, about others, and about the world around them. Mister Rogers brought them a one-to-one affirmation of their self-worth while also teaching the importance of kindness, love, and respect.

Sitting down to watch “Mister Rogers Neighborhood” sort of felt like going to your grandparents’ house for a half hour a day after school. And, 50 years since the series first premiered on television, these teachings and feelings are still evident in the trailer for the  documentary “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”

Not to be confused with the Tom Hanks film about the host’s life, “You Are My Friend,” in this documentary filmmaker Morgan Neville examines the life and legacy of Fred Rogers through interviews and footage of the show. And as with the first trailer, this new footage is another reminder that the host was one-of-a-kind and the new doc looks to remind the world of his impact.

The official synopsis is:

From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom), Won’t You Be My Neighbor? takes an intimate look at America’s favorite neighbor: Mister Fred Rogers. A portrait of a man whom we all think we know, this emotional and moving film takes us beyond the zip-up cardigans and the land of make-believe, and into the heart of a creative genius who inspired generations of children with compassion and limitless imagination.

“Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” will be released by Focus Features on June 8, 2018.
