Legacy sequels are all the rage nowadays in Hollywood, especially when it comes to horror. First, we had 2018’s “Halloween,” which earned massive money and was beloved by many fans. That led to a more recent success story—the “Scream” revitalization. And now, it appears Hollywood is holding out hope it can work with another horror franchise— “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”

According to Deadline, Freddie Prinze, Jr. is joining Jennifer Love Hewitt in a sequel to their ‘90s horror hit, “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” No word on what the story for the film might be, but it’s clear this is all coming together after the massive success of the two new “Scream” sequels. Much like ‘Last Summer’ did in the ‘90s, mimicking the success of “Scream,” it appears the franchise is copying the playbook once again.
“I Know What You Did Last Summer” follows the story of a group of friends who hit and killed someone with their car when they were acting stupid. Then a year later, someone is revealed to be stalking the group of friends, threatening their lives because of what happened, uh, last summer. The success of the first film led to a quick sequel a year later, “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.” A decade later, another sequel would happen, but we don’t really talk about that.

The franchise was always led by Love Hewitt, along with Prinze, Jr. So, it’s not a shock the studio would like to bring them back for this legacy sequel. We already know the film is also set to star Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Haur-King.
The “I Know What You Did Last Summer” sequel is set to arrive in theaters on July 18, 2025.
