With Universal pressing the brakes on “The Bride Of Frankenstein” at the eleventh hour (it was due to start shooting in February), many assumed that whole Dark Universe thing was over. One less cinematic universe to think about is a blessing. But alas, no one lets a potential franchise go.
The sticking point with Bill Condon‘s proposed movie seems to be casting. Proposed leads Angelina Jolie and Javier Bardem “aren’t walking away [but] they are not committing until this all gets rectified” as one trade put it yesterday. Essentially, they weren’t signing on for anything and don’t seem to be in any grand rush about making a decision. But according to The Wrap, should Jolie finally make it clear that she wants nothing to do with playing the bride, Condon has Gal Gadot in mind to take over.
Well, why not? She’s a charismatic actress who is quickly becoming the focal point of the DC Films universe, and has the kind of star power that can get a project greenlit. But who knows if she’ll want to be something that’s being described, chillingly, as “ ‘Fast and the Furious’ meets ‘The Avengers’ – but with super monsters. Yikes. We sure hope Gadot has some better offers on the table.
So we’ll see how this goes, but with the 2019 release date already off the table, it’s going to be a while before this ‘Frankenstein’ comes to life.
