Got a Tip?

Gareth Edwards Says ‘Thor 5’ Talk Are Pure Rumors, Wants To Stick To Original Sci-Fi Films

Taika Waititi has already clarified he won’t be back for “Thor 5 if Marvel Studios wants one. So who will take his place in the directing chair for that hypothetical sequel? Don’t look at “The Creator” director Gareth Edwards who, despite rumors to the contrary, insists he’s not connected to the project.

“I saw those rumors too. I saw it and I jokingly sent it to my girlfriend. I just texted her the link and said, ‘I didn’t want you to find out this way,’” Edwards said while speaking with BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast. “I’ve never heard anything about it. It’s totally… the internet is an incredible place.” Indeed it is, considering a possible “Thor 5” isn’t part of the next two phases of MCU releases, and it’s unclear if or when Chris Hemsworth‘s Asgardian hero will return onscreen.

But even if Marvel did ask Edwards to helm a film, the direct would still prefer to do his own thing. “I love those movies. I love Marvel, a lot of my friends work on Marvel films,” Edwards continued. “I’m very excited about the future of cinema, personally. I feel like everything we did differently on “The Creator” is probably the strongest part of the film. And I just want to push that even further, so having the freedom and being able to take risks, being allowed to fail. I think that’s all an important part of any creativity.”

Edward’s latest blockbuster featured the director using his singular DIY approach to make a tactile, believable near-future world on a small budget. And while “The Creator” wasn’t original at all story-wise, the film’s visuals are indeed groundbreaking. It’s arguably the best-looking genre project of the year, and all on an $80 million budget. For reference, “Thor: Love And Thunder” had a $250 million budget.

But don’t expect Edwards to ever return to franchise filmmaking. He won’t rule out the possibility entirely, but he’s happy pushing boundaries on his own projects. “I love all the other movies and franchises, I go to see them. I have most of them on my DVD/Blu-ray shelf. But I really want to keep pursuing original sci-fi,” he told the podcast. “Was that a very politically correct answer? I never say never. In the right circumstances, absolutely.”

“The Creator” will be available to stream on Hulu on December 20. As for “Thor 5,” well, the rumors continue.
