‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ Trailer: Takashi Yamazaki’s Oscar-Winning Kaiju Hit Returns With A Direct Sequel

After spending the last year as one of the rare Godzilla movies to cross all the way into mainstream awards conversation, “Godzilla Minus Zero” is back with its first official teaser. The new film is once again written, directed, and handled on the visual-effects side by Takashi Yamazaki, with the teaser confirming that the story picks up in 1949, two years after the events of “Godzilla Minus One.” The official Godzilla site also says the sequel continues the story of the Shikishima family as they face “an all-new calamity,” which gives the first look a very clear line of continuity back to the previous film rather than treating this as a disconnected follow-up.

The teaser also confirms the return of Ryunosuke Kamiki as Koichi Shikishima and Minami Hamabe as Noriko Oishi. The official first-look write-up keeps the focus on the Shikishima family, with the sequel set in 1949 and continuing their story as they face “an all-new calamity.” That keeps the new film tied directly to the same characters and family unit at the center of “Godzilla Minus One,” rather than treating it as a looser follow-up.

A few other key basics are already locked in. The movie will open in Japan on November 3, 2026, through TOHO, with GKIDS handling a wide North American theatrical release beginning November 6, 2026. Official materials also describe it as the first Japanese-produced Godzilla film made for IMAX, which gives the sequel a bigger exhibition hook without changing the essential pitch: Yamazaki is returning to continue the story of Koichi, Noriko, and their family under renewed Godzilla threat.
