A ‘Groundhog Day’ TV Series Is The Works, According To Stephen Tobolowsky

With Jason Reitman‘s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” reboot set to reunite the original cast, it seems we’ve entered the timeline full of reboots of iconic comedies made by Harold Ramis and Bill Murray that may get revived soon. That’s right, campers, we could have a “Groundhog Day” TV show in the works, according to Stephen Tobolowsky, who played Ned Ryerson in the original film and would reprise his role in the TV show.

In an episode of The Production Meeting Podcast, Tobolowsky revealed that the time-loop classic film could come back. “There’s talk about a Groundhog Day series in the works,” Tobolowsky said. “One of the producers – I was working on ‘The Goldbergs‘ or ‘Schooled‘, one of those shows over on the Sony lot, and one of [the producers] saw me and goes, ‘Oh, Stephen! Stephen! We’re working on a ‘Groundhog Day’ TV show. Could you be Ned for the TV show?’ I go, ‘Sure. Yeah. No problem’… But it’s Ned thirty years later. What has his life become?”

It seems unlikely that Bill Murray would return to star in a TV show based on “Groundhog Day,” but given he has cameos in both the second “Zombieland” movie, and both “Ghostbusters” reboots, we can’t rule out a new cameo in this show.

That being said, a sequel TV show centered around the irritating insurance agent Ned Ryerson set after the events of the film, exploring the “real” timeline of events, could be interesting. If Ned ends up as the central character, we would assume a new time-loop would have to be involved — because otherwise why bother continuing the story? And more importantly, would the TV show acknowledge the popularity of the time-loop concept like the upcoming Hulu movie “Palm Springs“? Only time will tell.

It is worth noting that both Murray and Tobolowsky already brought back their characters from “Groundhog Day” for TV in a Jeep commercial for the Super Bowl earlier this year, and it was great.
