Director Gina Prince-Bythewood Says Sony Is Unsure ‘Silver & Black’ Will Work Without Spider-Man

Despite “Venom” already proving, for better or worse, that you don’t need Spider-Man to make a successful “Spider-Man” movie, it seems like Sony remains skeptical to the success of its own Marvel Universe. What was meant to be the first female superhero team-up for Sony, “Silver & Black,” was then split into separate solo films, but now the film’s original director, Gina Prince-Bythewood, says Sony is unsure about the project’s future without Spider-Man.

While promoting her Netflix film, “Old Guard,” Prince-Bythewood talked to GamesRadar about the future of her Marvel project. “My honest answer is I don’t know,” she said. “My honest answer is I don’t know,” she revealed. “I really love those characters, I loved having them together. I thought, what we came up with was a really good, really organic way to have the two together. That world is changing so much because of the success of the Spider-Man films.”

“There’s a question of, ‘Can you really have these films with Spider-Man not in them? Should he at least have some sort of part in them?’ That’s always the question. I’ve taken two years off of that for [The Old Guard] so once this gets out into the world, I hope it’s a success, and then I’ll certainly go back and start talking with them again.”

It seems strange that Sony is now backtracking on their superhero films after the success of both “Into the Spider-Verse,” and “Venom,” which very much did not include Peter Parker or any other Spider-Man. In addition to a “Venom” sequel, the next Marvel movie on Sony’s slate is the Spider-Man-less “Morbius,” starring Jared Leto. Maybe they’re hoping to have Tom Holland’s Spider-Man appear in more of their movies and connect them in the near future, with yet another attempt at a “Sinister Six” movie.

As for “Silver & Black,” Prince-Bythewood teased last April that the project may find new life as a Disney+ show.
