CinemaCon 2024 is in full swing in Las Vegas, and some exciting news came from Lionsgate’s film panel, including info on two upcoming Henry Cavill movies with the studio. The first tidbit is that Cavill’s previously untitled action film directed by Guy Ritchie (“The Gentlemen”) is going to be titled “In The Grey,” which also stars Jake Gyllenhaal (“The Covenant”) and Eiza González (“Ambulance”) in lead roles. “In The Grey” won’t be gracing screens until sometime in 2025, but it should be worth the wait. The European-set action pic centers on a group of extraction gunmen who, when billions are stolen, attempt to steal them back. This collaboration will mark Cavill’s third movie with Ritchie after the upcoming “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” and “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.”
Another big Lionsgate project for Cavill is a remake of the “Highlander” franchise from “John Wick” director Chad Stahelski. The fantasy action picture is expected to go in front of cameras this year. While promoting his other films, Cavill briefly spoke about the sword-clashing action flick (the British actor is no stranger to swinging a sword after multiple seasons of “The Witcher”).
“If you thought you’d seen me do swordwork before, you haven’t seen anything yet,” Cavill teased the CinemaCon crowd. “I’m a lover of the original [‘Highlander’] movies, for better or for worse, and it’s one of those things where when I was reading the script for the first time, I wasn’t quite too sure where they were going to go with it.” The actor also said that while the original films “touched on the lore,” their take is will also service die-hard fans. “My goodness me oh my, we are going deep into these characters,” he said.
Sadly, there weren’t many substantial updates on the status of the “John Wick” franchise or spinoffs beyond next year’s “Ballerina” (undergoing extensive reshoots in Budapest to beef up the action). However, a “Ballerina” trailer featuring Keanu Reeves and star Ana De Armas was shown, and it apparently impressed audiences in attendance.
Then again, as for the status of more “John Wick,” with Stahelski now steering this new “Highlander” era, presumably with a franchise in mind, perhaps the Keanu Reeves-led action series will receive some much-needed respite.
Other projects Stahelski has been brewing are “Rainbow Six” with Michael B. Jordan and the Sony Pictures samurai movie “Ghost of Tsushima,” and it’s unclear when “John Wick 5” will come together. Still, Stahelski is now godfathering all “John Wick” properties for Lionsgate and overseeing an upcoming series, so he might need to hand off those directing reins at some point.
First up before all this, though, Cavill’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” will be released by Lionsgate on April 19.
