‘Bucking Fastard’ First Look: Rooney & Kate Mara Star In Werner Herzog’s Latest Drama

One of the bigger stories of recent memory is the return of German filmmaker Werner Herzog to English-langague scripted material, since 2016’s “Salt & Fire,” as he’s directing “Bucking Fastard” with quite an impressive cast that is being hyped because we’ll see, for the first time, acting siblings Rooney Mara (“The Girls With The Dragon Tattoo”) and Kate Mara (“Friendship”) co-starring in the movie.

Thanks to an official post from Hanway Films on their social media account, we now have our first look at The Mara Sisters in character from “Bucking Fastard.” Other actors set for roles are Orlando Bloom (“The Lord of The Rings”) and Domhnall Gleeson (“Never Let Me Go”) as they confirmed the movie has indeed wrapped.

In “Bucking Fastard,” we will see The Mara Sisters playing Jean and Joan Holbrooke as the Herzog pic explores “two sisters who are so close to each other that they speak in unison, love the same man, and have the same dreams. They even make the same slip of the tongue in unison. In search of an imaginary land, the Orkneys, where true love is possible, they start digging a tunnel through an entire mountain range.”

Screen Daily adds that it will be set against “a contemporary urban backdrop and an untamed wild Irish landscape, and follows two sisters who are so close to each other that they speak in unison, love the same man, and have the same dreams.”

Production took place in Ireland (hence the “Irish landscape”) and Slovenia, having wrapped filming last month, as the film is now heading to the Cannes Film Market with the aim of sharing footage with potential buyers.

Herzog, who is currently just as known for his acting roles, is attached to narrate an upcoming animated film from Oscar-winning director Bong Joon-ho (“Parasite,” “Mickey 17”) that is expected to explore the world of fascinating deep-sea creatures.
