Regardless of how big and powerful a Hollywood studio is, there’s no escaping the COVID-19 reality. Theaters across the world are closed and many won’t reopen likely until late-June or early-July. That means if you are a studio that wants to release a new film right now, the option is VOD. That’s the situation that Focus Features finds itself in with the release of the upcoming film “The High Note.”

“The High Note” is a film about a personal assistant that dreams of a career as a music producer. Unfortunately, even working for one of the biggest singers in the world hasn’t given the young assistant the opportunity to show off her music skills. But then, she’s given one shot to prove her worth as a music producer and if she does well, then her entire career could change in an instant.
The cast includes Dakota Johnson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Ice Cube, Zoe Chao, Eddie Izzard, June Diane Raphael, Bill Pullman, and Diplo. The film is directed by Nisha Ganatra, who is probably best known for her work on the comedy “Late Night,” which hit theaters last year.

As mentioned, “The High Note” was supposed to be released in theaters on May 8, but now will go straight to VOD on May 29.
Here’s the synopsis:
Set in the dazzling world of the LA music scene comes the story of Grace Davis (Tracee Ellis Ross), a superstar whose talent, and ego, have reached unbelievable heights, and Maggie (Dakota Johnson), her overworked personal assistant. While stuck running errands, Maggie still aspires to her childhood dream of becoming a music producer. When Grace’s manager (Ice Cube) presents her with a choice that could alter the course of her career, Maggie and Grace come up with a plan that could change their lives forever.
