After thirty-five years of development and waiting, Kevin Costner‘s Western epic “Horizon: An American Saga” begins next year. And the first part of the long-gestating passion project for the actor-director arrives in theaters in two parts: Part One in June 2024, and Part Two in August. Add in three sequels already greenlit, and “Horizon” could end up a motion picture saga with a scope as large as James Cameron‘s “Avatar” franchise.
But will there be the same kind of audience for Costner’s series of features? After all, Westerns haven’t been popular on the big screen for longer than “Horizon” has been in the pipeline. And while Costner could probably bank on the popularity of Taylor Sheridan‘s “Yellowstone” to help him with fanfare, his shaky relationship with the Paramount series could spell trouble for his films.
But that’s all speculation for now; onto “Horizon” and its first teaser. The brief teaser doesn’t give away very much, but it features Costner’s character riding on horseback before turning to face the camera and unloading his rifle. It then reveals that “Horizon” begins in two separate installments next summer.
Here’s an official synopsis for “Horizon,” courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures:
In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, “Horizon: An American Saga” explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.
“Horizon: An American Saga” boasts a gigantic ensemble cast, with Costner and Sienna Miller as leads. Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, Jamie Campbell Bower, Luke Wilson, Thomas Haden Church, and Jena Malone also star. Other cast includes Tatanka Means, Alejandro Edda, Michael Rooker, Isabelle Fuhrman, Ella Hunt, Jeff Fahey, and Tom Payne.
“Horizon: An American Saga” arrives in theaters next summer, with “Part One” releasing on June 28, 2024 and “Part Two” on August 16, 2024. Watch the teaser for Costner’s epic below.
