Two unqualified bozos, one rich teen, and a straightforward gig that immediately goes sideways: that’s the setup for “Idiots,” the new comedy from Macon Blair, which has released a new trailer ahead of its theatrical opening later this summer.
Written and directed by Blair— known for his roles in the films “Blue Ruin” and “Green Room,” as well as his directorial debut, “I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore”—“Idiots” stars Dave Franco and O’Shea Jackson Jr. as two men hired to transfer a wealthy teenager, played by Mason Thames (known from “The Black Phone” franchise), to rehab. What should be a simple job quickly spirals into dangerous mayhem, with Kiernan Shipka, Nicholas Braun, and Peter Dinklage also starring.
The film arrives with festival bona fides, having been named an official selection of both the Sundance Film Festival and the SXSW Film Festival (read our review). Blair, who also produces, said the real draw was watching the ensemble throw themselves into the movie’s escalating chaos.
“The big spectacle of the movie is the ensemble: it’s a pile-up of dynamite actors going full tilt through broad slapstick comedy, chase movie shenanigans, nasty human darkness and ultimately a hopeful friendship story,” Blair said in a statement. “From the on-fire leads to the scene-stealing cameos, it was a plain delight to watch every single one of these folks work at being Idiots.”
