Steven Spielberg is coming off a busy year, which saw him knock out “The Post,” all while finishing the upcoming blockbuster “Ready Player One.” Not one to put his feet up for too long, the director is now weighing his options for his next movies, which looks to be between “West Side Story” and “Indiana Jones 5.” The remake of the iconic big screen musical seemed to take the pole position when it was revealed last week that casting had started. But, that won’t be the case.
THR reveals that while Spielberg is indeed starting the hunt for his “West Side Story” ensemble, it won’t be filming before “Indiana Jones 5,” which will start production in early 2019 for its July 10, 2020 release date. So, that basically leaves the director free and easy this year, right? Well, don’t forget that Spielberg is keeping the door open to knock out another movie quickly, if a terrific script like “The Post” happens to cross his desk. That being said, sources say the chances of that happening again are pretty slim, but it does still mean that Spielberg isn’t completely locked in to his current schedule.
So, it looks like Spielberg will spent 2018 promoting “Ready Player One,” looking in on the casting hunt for “West Side Story,” and preparing to shoot “Indiana Jones 5.” Unless something changes. It also means that for those worried about the director’s “West Side Story,” they can save on the Pepto-Bismol for now, because it’s still a pretty long way off.
