Hulu is in a streaming renaissance with the critical success of “The Dropout,” “Pam & Tommy,” and other series. In fact, between its original programming, its FX on Hulu shows, and exclusive movie releases for 20th Century Studios, Hulu has carved out a critical space for itself in the current market. And, of course, Hulu would like that to continue.

So, what’s the most anticipated new project for the streamer? It may be Hulu’s series adaptation of Charles Yu‘s 2020 National Book Award winner, “Interior Chinatown.” Variety reports that Hulu has ordered the 10-episode series with Jimmy O. Yang set to star. The series has been in development since October 2020, shortly after Yu’s novel won its NBA. In the show, Yang plays Willis Wu a background actor on a police procedural series who witnesses a real-life crime and starts an amateur investigation into Chinatown’s underworld.
Hulu is high on the book-to-television adaptation, with “Interior Chinatown” being the latest one for the streamer. Other recent series orders based on books for Hulu include “Tiny Beautiful Things,” “The Other Black Girl,” and “Black Cake.” Of course, one can’t forget the previous Hulu series based on books either, like “Normal People,” “Nine Perfect Strangers,” and “Conversations With Friends.” And of course, there’s “Dopesick,” which nabbed Hulu a couple of Emmy Awards.
Yang’s previous credits include “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Love Hard,” and HBO‘s “Silicon Valley.” He also recently appeared in Netflix‘s “Me Time,” with Mark Wahlberg and Kevin Hart. Up next he has the sports comedy “80 For Brady,” filming now.
What else is there to say about “Interior Chinatown”? Well, Taika Waititi is attached to direct the show’s pilot and also serves as executive producer with Participant‘s Jeff Skoll, Miura Kite, and Dive‘s Garrett Basch. Charles Yu also serves as the series showrunner. Along with his work as a novelist, Yu has several years of experience writing for TV. He’s penned episodes for HBO’s “Westworld,” FX‘s “Legion,” and AMC‘s “Lodge 49,” among others. Other literary works by Yu include 2010’s “How To Live Safely In A Science Fictional Universe” and the short story collections “Third Class Superhero” and “Sorry Please Thank You.”
With the talent on board for “Interior Chinatown,” expect the series to be one of Hulu’s most buzzworthy shoes for 2023/2024. More news about this show will likely hit soon.
