Got a Tip?

‘Iron Man’ Soundtrack Won’t Feature Your Favorite Black Sabbath Song

What? A soundtrack to “Iron Man” and no titular Black Sabbath song? Yup, it’s true. In fact, all the hard rockin’ songs in the trailer – AC/DC’s “Back In Black,” Filter’s “Hey Man, Nice Shot,” Audioslave’s “Cochise,” and Curve’s “Hell Above Water” (from the 2001 album The Gift) – are absent from the soundtrack and that’s likley cause they won’t be featured in the film.

Due May 6 on Lion’s Gate records, the soundtrack disc mostly features score from composer Ramin Djawadi (“Prison Break”) as well as several “bonus tracks” including nervy skate-punk classic “Institutionalized” by Suicidal Tendencies (“All he wanted was a Pepsi!”). Bonus meaning anything that’s not Djawdi composed is probably not in the film either. Zzzzz. Fans of the metal in the trailers should prepare themselves for decidely un-r0cking score (like it’ll really matter to them. But wait look at the last track, Jack Urbont does “Iron Man” (who?). Should we prepare ourselves for some cheesy cover? (kinda can’t wait to hear it; Is this the same Urbont who wrote music for the soap “Guiding Light”? Dear God, say yes).

“Iron Man” is the first of two self-financed films that Marvel studios have produced independently of Hollywood studios (the second being “The Incredible Hulk”) and as much as we’ve dogged these films, on a second look, the leads of Robert Downey Jr. and Ed Norton are solid and bold choices for lead stars. Now whether they can do anything within the frame of these super-hero films is another thing entirely, but we figured we’d give them some casting props somewhere (in fact the “Iron Man” cast in general is very respectable).

Our favorite piece of trivia we discovered the other day is that “Iron Man” director Jon Favreau cut his filmmaking chops early on by helming an episode of Judd Apatow’s 2001 college comedy, “Undeclared.”
