James Gunn Told David Ayer The ‘Suicide Squad’ Director’s Cut Will “Have Its Time To Be Shared”

A lot has happened in the world of DC superhero filmmaking since David Ayer released “Suicide Squad” back in 2016. “Justice League” was released with a ton of controversy. James Gunn rebooted ‘Suicide Squad.’ Hell, the whole damn cinematic universe is getting a reboot. But Ayer is still on social media championing the release of his Director’s Cut of the 2016 “Suicide Squad.” And according to the filmmaker, it will eventually get a chance to be seen.

In a recent post on X (fka Twitter), David Ayer talked about why he keeps pounding the drum and stoking interest in a re-release of “Suicide Squad.” The filmmaker explained that the intense situation regarding the film’s production, editing, and eventual theatrical release has made it so he has forever been changed. Not only that, but he has proof that his version of the film plays much better with fans. All that to say, he wants a bit of vindication.

“What’s your advice on how to navigate this situation with grace? There’s a genuine curiosity and interest from a lot of people,” wrote Ayer. “And I’m aware of there is another group of people that have fun mocking the film. Your comment is a perfect example of how many are magnetically drawn discussion to the 2016 film in a negative way. Have you ever had an experience in life that didn’t until the way you wanted, that dragged you, that made you rethink everything? I have.”

He continued, “All I know is my unseen film plays much better than the studio release. The interest in my cut being show seems real and organic. And Gunn told me it would have it’s time to be shared. He absolutely deserves to launch to launch his DC universe without more drama about old projects.”

It would appear Ayer does confirm that he has spoken to Gunn about eventually releasing the “Ayer Cut” of “Suicide Squad.” However, it definitely doesn’t seem as if it is happening anytime soon. If Ayer and Gunn are content with waiting until the new DCU is launched with “Superman: Legacy” in 2025, we still have quite a bit of time before we can expect the new version of “Suicide Squad” to get its moment in the sun.

At that point, perhaps we’re talking a 10th-anniversary release in 2026? We’ll just have to wait and see.
