Jennifer Lawrence’s Long-Delayed A24 PTSD Soldier Drama Sold To Apple, Titled ‘Causeway’ & Coming Later This Year

Do you remember an untitled Lila Neugebauer-directed drama starring Jennifer Lawrence as a soldier suffering from PTSD and known in some circles as “Red, White, And Water”? Announced back in 2019, it’s been on our Most Anticipated Films Of The Year list for at least two years running, but there has not been a peep about the film until now.

Seemingly in limbo for two years, the movie is finally coming out. But in news that doesn’t necessarily bode very super well, A24 has sold the film off to Apple TV+, and it has a new official title, “Causeway.” Apple announced today that the film would be coming to theaters and the Apple TV+ streaming service later this year and released a brief synopsis:

“Causeway” is an intimate portrait of a soldier struggling to adjust to her life after returning home to New Orleans.

The original synopsis spoke of a  U.S. soldier (Lawrence) who suffers a traumatic brain injury while fighting in Afghanistan, so that’s likely part of the story they’re saving for the first trailers.

Emmy Award-nominee Brian Tyree Henry (“Atlanta,” “Bullet Train”) co-stars alongside Lawrence. Filmed in New Orleans, the A24 film is written by Ottessa Moshfegh & Luke Goebel, and Elizabeth Sanders. Lawrence produces alongside Justine Ciarrocchi for Excellent Cadaver. Samira Wiley, Linda Emond, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Russell Harvard, and Jayne Houdyshell also co-star. Alex Somers of the musical duo Jónsi & Alex, producing records for Sigur Rós and more, has written the film’s score.

Neugebauer is a theatre director first known for Broadway’s “The Waverly Gallery,” “Maid,” and “The Last Thing He Told Me.” “Causeway” is her directorial debut. Update: the film has been dated for a November 4 release on Apple TV+. No word yet if a theatrical date is coming before that.
