Jerrod Carmichael is one of the most underrated comedians working today. After years of standup, supporting roles in films, and his own sitcom (“The Carmichael Show”) that ran for three seasons, Jerrod Carmichael is sadly still not a household name. However, with the hype surrounding his recent standup special, “Rothaniel,” it appears the comedian is starting to gain some much-deserved traction. Unfortunately, that isn’t going to result in two of his most anticipated projects going into production.
According to an interview with GQ, Jerrod Carmichael updated his slate of future projects, and sadly, that doesn’t include previously announced collaborations with the Safdie Brothers and Quentin Tarantino.

You may remember that several years ago, it was announced that Carmichael would team up with the Safdies for a remake of the iconic comedy film, “48 Hours.” The original stars Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy and influenced a ton of buddy-cop comedies that would follow in the ‘80s. While Carmichael admits the “48 Hours” remake is dead, he does tease that there are new ideas that he’s working on with the “Uncut Gems” filmmakers.
As disappointing as the “48 Hours” news might be, perhaps even more upsetting is the news that Sony has passed on the proposed “Django/Zorro” crossover film Carmichael was working on alongside Quentin Tarantino. As the name suggests, the film would have featured both the legendary hero, Zorro, and the main character of Tarantino’s “Django Unchained.” Unfortunately, it appears that not even an “incredible” script is enough to get it made.
“Quentin’s a lunatic who I love, and I’m happy that I got to spend the time,” explained Carmichael. “We saw exploitation flicks at the New Beverly, he read me scenes that never made it to his movies, that he had typed out, in his kitchen after making fresh-squeezed lemonade for me. It was really special. It’s actually an incredible, incredible script that came in from that ‘Django/Zorro’ that I would love for Sony to figure out, but I realize the impossibility of it. But I still think we wrote a $500 million film.”

It’s still unclear if these relationships Carmichael formed with the Safdie Brothers and Tarantino will result in any new film/TV projects, but we can still hold out hope. In the meantime, you can watch his recently released film, “On the Count of Three,” see him in the new series, “Irma Vep,” or wait a bit longer to see him in the cast of Yorgos Lanthimos‘ upcoming “Poor Things.” The aforementioned “Rothaniel” is available now on HBO Max.
