Got a Tip?

‘Transparent’ Creator Jill Soloway To Direct A Biopic About Astronaut Sally Ride

Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen Hollywood become obsessed with a good, old-fashioned space drama. Last year, it was “First Man.” This year, we have not one, not two, but three space dramas that have premiered in theaters and festivals, with “Ad Astra,” “Lucy in the Sky,” and the upcoming “Proxima,” starring Eva Green. But the space fun isn’t stopping anytime soon, as it appears that Lionsgate has tapped director Jill Soloway to come aboard a new film, titled “Ride.”

Collider has reported that Soloway is set to helm the upcoming space drama “Ride,” which is a biopic about the famous astronaut Sally Ride. For those not familiar, Sally Ride was the first US female astronaut in space, and the third overall, after two Soviet women. Obviously, her story is perfect for the big screen, as it’s a tale of overcoming obstacles and making history. The script for “Ride” was originally penned by Krystin Ver Linden, but the studio has brought on writer Cassie Pappas to work on the film, as well.

Nathan Kahane, president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said, “Sally Ride is an American hero and icon whose life and career was and is endlessly fascinating and inspirational. In the hands of Jill Soloway and our tremendous team of producers, we feel we have the right storytellers to honor and properly tell Sally’s incredible story.”

This isn’t the first big project that Soloway has become linked to over the last year. The filmmaker, who is probably best known for being the creator of the Emmy-wining Amazon series “Transparent,” is signed on to develop a big-budget action film “Red Sonja,” as well as co-writing and directing the upcoming Julianne Moore film “Mothertrucker.” Needless to say, Soloway is a busy, busy filmmaker.

There’s no anticipated release date for “Ride,” and it’s still unclear which of the three projects Soloway will begin work on first.
