'Red Sonja' Writer-Director Jill Soloway Says Film Will Be Similar To Superhero Films 'Dark Knight' & 'Deadpool'

Red Sonja” isn’t even close to production but there’s already been some serious drama behind-the-scenes. The project was originally announced as being directed by Bryan Singer, but after the filmmaker’s most recent #MeToo accusations, he was dismissed from the film. Now, there’s “Transparent” creator Jill Soloway, who has taken over the role of writer-director of the action film. And speaking to Deadline, it appears that Soloway has very clear ideas about what “Red Sonja” is going to be like.

Soloway said that getting the opportunity to write and direct the project is a “dream come true.” But things get a bit muddled when the director goes on to describe the tone and style that “Red Sonja” will have.

“I can really have so much fun with ‘Red Sonja,’” said Soloway. “I see her a little bit more like the first kind of bad girl superhero. Sort of like the Batman of ‘The Dark Knight’ or ‘Deadpool,’ you know?”

The filmmaker continued, “The world is changing so much right now for superheroes, that I just really look forward to not only going to the edge of what I’ve ever written and directed before, but to the edge of the genre as well.”

What is a bit confusing is the mention of both “The Dark Knight” and “Deadpool.” Those films, while both in the superhero genre, are about as polar opposite as you can get. Sure, they’re both well-reviewed, fan-appreciated, and box office hits, but really that’s the beginning, middle, and end of their similarities.

“The Dark Knight” is a serious, dark, gritty crime thriller that features Batman but is about as far away from a true “superhero” film that the genre can produce. Whereas “Deadpool” is the “Animal House” of comic book films, sparing no curse word or dirty joke, while also fully embracing the superhero-y aspect of the genre.

It appears that Soloway is just bringing up a couple of superhero films that has pushed the genre, perhaps not fully knowing specifics about the films. Or maybe, just maybe, “Red Sonja” is going to be a hard-R serious action film with some dirty jokes and goofball silliness thrown in for good measure?

Should be interesting.
