Back in 2020, it was revealed that filmmaker Joe Cornish was starting to feel out if John Boyega would be into the idea of making a sequel to “Attack the Block.” A little more than a year later, it was confirmed that “Attack the Block 2” is happening with Boyega leading the cast. Now, as production starts to creep closer, the star of the film is now willing to open up about what the highly-anticipated sequel will look like and why it’s an interesting project to make now.
Speaking to Deadline, John Boyega, who is currently promoting his film “The Woman King” and the forthcoming Netflix feature “They Cloned Tyrone,” talked about some of the inspiration behind “Attack the Block 2.” And apparently, one of the most intriguing aspects of the sequel will be showing just how much Boyega’s character has changed over the years, as well as the titular block of housing in London.
Boyega commented that the film will pick up with his character, years after the first film, now in his 30s, who is living in a London that has “changed between the first movie and now.”
“We go back and look at the locations where we shot the first movie [Southwark and Walworth in south London]—once dodgy areas—and we find that it’s all gleaming, high-end apartments and Starbucks,” he explained. “There’s a whole world that we’re about to explore here with a whole new take on that universe, building and revisiting those characters.”
For those who aren’t familiar with “Attack the Block,” the film was released in 2011 and featured Boyega as the leader of a teen gang who helps a woman during an alien invasion on their block. It’s unclear just what the plot for the new film might be.
A release date for “Attack the Block 2” has yet to be announced, but Boyega confirms that he has the film on his schedule for an upcoming shoot.
