Venice Director Reaffirms ‘Joker’ Is “Absolutely” In The Oscars Discussion & Defends The Film’s Controversial Plot

The biggest story coming out of the first weekend at the Venice Film Festival is clearly “Joker.” Coming into the event, all eyes were on Todd Phillips’ comic book film, as many were shocked that Warner Bros. would consider the film as worthy to compete at the prestigious festival. Now, days removed from the film’s premiere, and generally favorable reviews, it’s clear why the studio took such a big risk, as it seems to have paid off.

Speaking to Deadline, Venice director Alberto Barbera discussed “Joker” and the reception the film has received, thus far. And as he predicted weeks ago, the first reviews from Phillips’ film continues to fuel his argument about “Joker” having a big future at the Oscars.

“I think [WB] made a good choice,” said Barbera. “The right choice. The film deserves the reception it is getting. It goes beyond the boundaries of the genre. Joaquin Phoenix’s performance is outstanding and Todd Phillips did a great job.”

When asked about the chances “Joker” could be in the running for Oscars, he added, “They’re very good. Absolutely, it will be in the running.”

Of course, much of the discussion surrounding the film, after its Venice premiere, seems to revolve around the plot. Some argue that the film is a satire of the modern world, where insanity can lead to terrible consequences. Others say that Phillips has created a film that may inspire others to commit horrible acts, as they could be inspired by the “hero” of the film.

Barbera doesn’t subscribe to the latter theory. When asked about the film’s potentially controversial plot leading to people becoming inspired, he said, “I don’t think so. The way it deals with those elements is intelligent. It’s not a simplistic view. Social factors, and other external factors, combine with the character’s state of mind to make it a complex picture. That’s a strength of the film. It’s a strong, unexpected and original film. Even if there are references to ‘The King Of Comedy’ and ‘Taxi Driver,’ it’s a very original movie.”

Obviously, once the general public gets a chance to watch “Joker” on October 4, when it hits theaters, we’ll probably hear more people discussing the film’s plot and Phillips’ intentions. Until then, the internet will internet. So, debate away!
