Got a Tip?

Director Jon Watts Reportedly Not Confirmed For Future ‘Spider-Man’ Films As Jeremy Renner Shows His Marvel Allegiance

Welcome, True Believer, to Day 2 of the hostage situation regarding everyone’s favorite superhero wallcrawler, Spider-Man. As it currently stands, he’s being held by Sony Pictures, who have apparently turned down Disney and Kevin Feige’s ransom offer. With no reports of a counteroffer, it would appear that Spider-Man will end up locked away for the rest of time under the watchful eye of his captor, Sony.

All kidding aside, Disney and Sony are still squabbling over the future of Peter Parker, with no deal in sight. But, according to a new update from Deadline, it seems as though reports of director Jon Watts returning for two more “Spider-Man” films is a bit premature.

The report says that Watts was only contracted through this year’s ‘Far From Home,’ the ‘Spider-Man’ film he directed starring Tom Holland, and Sony has the option to offer Watts the third film, but no contract has been signed. Long story short, “Spider-Man” might be moving forward with Tom Holland as the star, but Watts may not be along for the next adventure.

Obviously, this doesn’t mean that Watts is waiting to find out what happens between Sony and Disney before returning. In fact, there’s really no reason the director would not return, as both Spidey films have been huge hits for him and he’s likely in line to make a ton of cash for whatever form the new ‘Spider-Man’ film takes. One thing is for sure, Holland will be back for the third film, as he was originally contracted for a trilogy. However, the reports that Sony is going to have both Watts and Holland for a 4th film is definitely jumping the gun.

So, Marvel fans, what are we to do? Are we destined to have a Spider-Man-free MCU? Well, lucky for us, Jeremy Renner is here. The ‘Avengers’ actor has gone on Instagram to show his support for Disney/Marvel Studios by asking Sony to come to its Spidey-senses.

“Hey @sonypictures we want Spider-Man back to @therealstanlee and @marvel please, thank you #congrats #spidermanrocks #???? #please,” wrote the actor.

Maybe all that was needed to have Sony and Disney work something out was a bit of encouragement from Hawkeye? Eh, probably not.
