Got a Tip?

‘Jonathan’ Trailer: Ansel Elgort Plays “Siblings” Trapped In The Same Body In This Mind-Bending Thriller

Sibling rivalry is a real thing. Since the dawn of man, there has always been this innate drive to somehow do better than your sibling. But in the new film “Jonathan,” the question is presented — what do you do when your sibling is inside your own body?

As you can probably tell from that premise and the new trailer, “Jonathan,” starring Ansel Elgort as the titular character, is a bit of a complicated film. Elgort plays a character with a unique condition. During the day he’s Jonathan, a normal, everyday sort of guy. But at night, this other person takes over his body and leads an entirely different life, including having a romantic partner played by Suki Waterhouse. Once Jonathan realizes what’s been happening when he closes his eyes, things get complicated between “siblings.”

Elgort has been hit or miss lately. After a star-making, Golden Globe-nominated performance in Edgar Wright’sBaby Driver,” the actor hit a stumbling block with the incredibly awful box office bomb “Billionaire Boys Club.” Now, he hopes to rebound with “Jonathan” before beginning work on the highly-anticipated remake “West Side Story” with filmmaker Steven Spielberg.

The film comes from feature debut director Bill Oliver, who also co-wrote. Joining Elgort and Waterhouse in the cast is the always-watchable Patricia Clarkson, playing the therapist attempting to help Jonathan with his mental issues. That is, unless his issues are far more than just mental illness.

“Jonathan” premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival and will hit select theaters and VOD on November 16.

Here’s the synopsis:

In this sci-fi-tinged drama, Ansel Elgort plays two brothers living very separate lives – inside the same body. Previously content to live life in shifts with one another, their delicate balance is ruined when they become emotionally involved with the same woman (Suki Waterhouse).
