Jordan Vogt-Roberts Shows What He'd Bring To A Marvel Project In An Ad For 'Avengers' Video Game

Despite doing a pretty great job on the underrated “Kong: Skull Island” (which is looking even better in hindsight considering how difficult it has been to get people interested in the Monsterverse film franchise), things have been relatively quiet for director Jordan Vogt-Roberts. Sure, he has a few projects in development (when is that “Metal Gear Solid” film ever getting made, though?), but outside of an upcoming ‘Walking Deadspinoff pilot episode and a PS4 commercial, Vogt-Roberts has kept a pretty low profile in recent years. Well, now he just released a new Marvel project that allows him to direct the Avengers characters. Kind of.

If you have been watching a lot of TV commercials lately, you’ll likely know that Marvel has just released a new video game based on “The Avengers.” And though it doesn’t feature any of the major MCU cast reprising their roles, the video game does feature the likes of Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, and Black Widow. And the ad that is being used to promote the release of the game was actually directed by none other than Vogt-Roberts.

Describing his joy at having a hand at a Marvel property, Vogt-Roberts tweeted, “It was a dream to fuse a hyper-kinetic camera & style of action with truly iconic MARVEL characters.”

He’s not lying about the hyper-kinetic camera work and stylized version of the action used in the ad. It’s clear that Vogt-Roberts’ love of video games has influenced how he crafted this trailer. This isn’t the relatively realistic version of the Avengers seen in the MCU. The characters in the video game definitely veer to the comic book side of things with the over-the-top action and frenetic action.

If this is somehow a hint at what Vogt-Roberts might do if given the reins on a real MCU film, it would be an intriguing concept. Sure, action in the Marvel films has largely been pretty good, especially in the “Captain America” sequels and the latter ‘Avengers’ films (basically, the films directed by the Russos), but all of that pales in comparison to what the filmmaker uses in this quick ad. Plus, when you consider much of the action in these movies are CGI to begin with, there’s not much that separates the video game commercial from a proof-of-concept sizzle reel of what Vogt-Roberts would do with a real superhero film.

Alas, that’s not an option, as the filmmaker hasn’t been announced as a helmer for a future MCU project. So, until that happens, we just have to look at the below ad as a hint at what could be.
