‘Lockdown’: Doug Liman To Direct Anne Hathaway In A Low Budget, Pandemic-Era Heist Film

Doug Liman is a filmmaker that is probably best known for helming features with massive budgets. We’re talking recent films such as “The Bourne Identity,” “Edge of Tomorrow,” “The Wall,” and the forthcoming “Chaos Walking.” But for his next feature, it appears he’s stripping back the budget quite a bit for a timely film about a heist during quarantine, titled “Lockdown.”

As reported by Deadline, Liman is set to direct “Lockdown,” a sub-$10 million budgeted heist film that is set during the current pandemic. The report also claims that Anne Hathaway is in talks to star in the feature, with Cillian Murphy also rumored for a lead role. “Lockdown” is written by Steven Knight, the writer behind “Serenity,” which also starred Hathaway.

The plot details are still kept under wraps, but Deadline is calling “Lockdown” a heist movie mixed with a romantic comedy. And with Knight writing, who the hell knows what else is going on? If “Serenity” is anything to go off of, this could be a bonkers film, to say the least.

Filming of “Lockdown” is expected to begin sometime this month and with that small budget, we’re thinking it’s going to be a relatively short shoot. That would mean we might be able to catch this film in theaters (or whatever platform) sooner rather than later. This makes sense, obviously, considering that Liman is squeezing this film in before he begins serious work on his forthcoming Tom Cruise-starring action film that is said to be shooting in space. That feature has a budget north of $200 million and is expected to be the first action film to shoot in space, thanks to a partnership with Elon Musk and SpaceX.
