Got a Tip?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Will Star In Live Action ‘Fraggle Rock’ Movie

Joseph Gordon-Levitt , Fraggle RockThe history of the "Fraggle Rock" movie has been a bumpy one. Cory Edwards ("Hoodwinked!") tried to make one at The Weinstein Company, but said back in 2010 that he was "struggling to stay in control of my own movie" and that the studio wanted to hire a new writer to make the movie "edgier." A year later, his iteration was pretty much scrapped (and we presume the involvement of the Scissors Sisters doing the music). Then in late 2011, New Regency took on the troubled property and hired some writers, but nothing much came of it and things went quiet for a couple of years. Last fall, word quietly emerged that "Fraggle Rock" was back in the hands of The Jim Henson Company and the movie was on track again. And indeed, it certainly is.

Variety reports that Joseph Gordon-Levitt will produce and star in a live-action "Fraggle Rock," with New Regency still onboard the project too. But that’s about all the news for now. No word yet on a screenwriter or director to tackle the world of Fraggles, Doozers, and Gorgs, but like anyone of a certain age, JGL grew up with this stuff. “The first screen personas I ever loved were Henson creations, first on ‘Sesame Street,’ and then on ‘Fraggle Rock,’” he saids in a statement. “Jim Henson’s characters make you laugh and sing, but they’re also layered, surprising, and wise. From Oscar the Grouch, to Yoda, to the Fraggles. I’ve never stopped loving his work, even as a young frisky man, and on into adulthood. Collaborating with Lisa Henson makes me confident we can do something that Jim would have loved. I’m grateful and excited to be working with New Regency on this project.”

So, "Fraggle Rock" lives. Who should direct? Tell us your suggestions below.
