Ever since Disney purchased the Muppets brand 15 years ago, the studio hasn’t really been able to crack the code on what makes the characters so popular. Outside of the 2011 film “The Muppets,” which earned over $100 million worldwide, most of the projects featuring Kermit and Co. have been disappointing (let’s not even mention the failed office comedy series). But alas, the Mouse House isn’t going to let the franchise wither away, and according to a new report, Disney is bringing the Muppets back for the upcoming streaming service.

The Splash Report says that Disney has hired Josh Gad and the duo behind the hit ABC series “Once Upon a Time,” Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, to relaunch the characters in a new streaming series for the Disney+ platform, titled “Muppets Live Another Day.”
The series will reportedly pick up right where 1984’s “The Muppets Take Manhattan” left off. The series will focus on Kermit as he must bring the Muppets back together (after being disbanded) to help locate the missing Rowlf.
Gad is probably best known for his roles in the Disney films “Frozen” and “Beauty and the Beast,” and has a very busy upcoming slate of films, including the just-announced “Hunchback of Notre Dame” live-action remake. However, the funny actor has some writing and producing credits under his belt as well.

It’s not reported as to what Gad’s role in ‘Muppets’ will be, if he’s going to help write or just produce, but with the talented Horowitz and Kitsis attached, this has all the makings of a fun series. Hopefully, Disney will finally get it right again and be able to utilize Kermit and the gang in a way that brings back fond memories from decades ago.
