‘Joyride’ Trailer: Olivia Colman Is On The Run In New Feel-Good Drama

Can you run away from your problems? A surprising journey gives two strangers more than either bargained for in “Joyride.” The film, starring Oscar winner Olivia Colman, gives voice to generational insecurities. Colman portrays a woman fed up with the choices that brought her to this point — including becoming a mother. Newcomer Charlie Reid co-stars as a young thief searching for whatever it means to be free. Brought together by chance,  their characters produce a trip full of introspective moments and fortuitous revelations.

Director Emer Reynolds comes to the project with an extensive editing background; her work can be seen in numerous films and series such as Channel 4’s “Shameless.” The editor-turned-filmmaker notably co-directed the documentary “Here Was Cuba” with John Murray before helming the critically acclaimed “Songs for While I’m Away.” In both cases, Reynolds brings attention to the humanity behind larger-than-life figures. It’s an aspect that also features prominently in her approach to the leading roles of “Joyride.”

Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

Joy (Colman) and Mully (Reid) are two lovable rogues. Joy is angry – she’s got a baby and motherhood does not come naturally to her; she feels she’s tossed her own dreams aside to give a screeching monster unconditional love. And, if she’s honest to herself, when she looks in the mirror she sees the shadow of her own neglectful mother. Twelve-year-old Mully also has a mum-shaped void in his life, as well as a conman dad. But Mully’s got balls; he knicks his dad’s stash of cash and steals a taxi in a bid for freedom. But, there’s an almighty yell from the back seat. It’s Joy – hungover, freaking out, and holding a baby! As they tear up the road on their riotous misadventure, we follow these roguish ‘outlaws’ in search of their dreams, in this feel-good, foul-mouthed fairy-tale.

An unlikely pairing proves to be life-changing in “Joyride.” The film premieres only in theaters across the UK and Ireland on July 29. No date is set yet for its North American debut. Watch the trailer below:
