Olivia Colman & Jessie Buckley To Reunite In New Comedy 'Wicked Little Letters'

Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley dazzled last year as Leda Caruso, the complicated, unlikeable woman at the heart of Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s adaptation of Elena Ferrante‘s “The Lost Daughter.” And it looks like fans of the in-demand actresses won’t have to wait too long for their onscreen reunion. Their next film together is on the market at the Cannes Film Festival, courtesy of Studiocanal.

Wicked Little Letters” stars Colman and Buckley as two neighbors in a 1920s English seaside village who come together to solve a mystery. What’s the mystery exactly? Well, someone’s sending expletive-laden letters to people all over town, and everyone thinks Buckley’s Rose is the culprit. Rose insists she’s innocent and soon teams up with Colman’s pious Edith and a local policewoman to track down who’s really behind the outrageous obscenities.

Based on a true story, “Letters” plans to shoot next fall in the UK with Thea Sharrock directing a script by British actor and writer Jonny Sweet. Colman co-produces through her South Of The River Pictures with Graham Broadbent and Peter Czernin, the Blueprint guys behind “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri” and “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.”

The Cannes movie market is booming this year with lots for sale, including Michel Gondry‘s first film in seven years. However, with Colman and Buckley in such high demand, “Wicked Little Letters” might be the hottest project on the lot. Could this film be a return for Colman to laugh-out-loud hilarity like her turn in Edgar Wright‘s “Hot Fuzz?” Given the premise of “Letters,” this film could be just that.
