Justin Kurzel Says ‘Mice’ Movie Starring Nicole Kidman Will Be “Straight Horror” & Is Developing FBI/Marijuana Thriller ‘Burning Rainbow Farm’

Justin Kurzel is a filmmaker who always tackles interesting topics. It’s always intriguing to find out what he is working on in the future. And in an upcoming The Playlist interview about his new film, “The Order,” filmmaker Justin Kurzel gives us an update about what film projects he has coming up, including a new horror film called “Mice.”

“I’m developing a horror film with Nicole and made up stories that Sean Grant, a collaborator that did ‘The Snowtown Murders,’ ‘Nitram‘ and ‘True History of the Kelly Gang‘ is writing,” said Kurzel. “I’ve been fascinated by the horror genre and the potential of that. I haven’t done a straight horror film before, so that’s exciting.”

He added, “I’m getting older now, and I feel this impatience in me to want to be on set and tell stories and feel excited about different genres and different types of stories that speak to me.”

He also revealed that he is making an adaptation of an old Lenny Abrahamson (“Room“) project, the book “Burning Rainbow Farm,” which tells the true story of two advocates of marijuana who had a five-day standoff with the FBI, which resulted in both of their deaths.

“I’m really excited by ‘Burning Rainbow Farm,'” he said. “I’m really hoping to do that soon. It’s based on a true event and set in America.”

In addition to his film work, Kurzel is also working on an interesting TV project, “Black Rabbit.” The upcoming Netflix series stars Jason Bateman and Jude Law and tells the story of the owner of a New York City club who finds his life turned upside down when his brother visits. He also teased a new show with Jacob Elordi.

“I’ve got a few things brewing at the moment; I feel very productive. I really want to be on set and doing many things,” explained Kurzel. “In the last couple of years, I’ve done that. I’ve just finished a series with Jacob Elordi based on a wonderful Booker Prize-winning novel called ‘Narrow Road to the Deep North‘ that Amazon is doing. And I’ve also just done a couple of episodes of Netflix‘s “Black Rabbitthat Jason Bateman is doing, and [‘The Order’ writer] Zach Baylin wrote, and Jude is also in it and a producer alongside Jason. I directed the last two episodes, which was fantastic; the first time I experienced being in New York and shooting, and the whole series has so much to do with sort of New York and reality of that place and what it is.”

“The Order” is expected to arrive in select theaters on December 6. You can read the whole interview on The Playlist in the coming days.
