Paramount Network has ordered a series adaptation of the 2000 film “Sexy Beast,” set to be a prequel series to the film. And if that wasn’t good enough, the network has hired an incredible filmmaker to help bring the adaptation to the screen.
The series will follow the origin story of a thief named Gal Dove, played by Ray Winstone in the film, according to Variety. It is also being reported that the series will see Gal and Don Logan, originally played by Ben Kingsley, get together during the early days of their complicated relationship, where Logan was a gangster. The series is set to take place during the “vibrant and volatile 1990s” and will also see how Gal and DeeDee met, where the adult film star would later become Gal’s wife.
Paramount Network has ordered a 10-episode first season which will see Michael Caleo as a writer and executive producer. Caleo is experienced in TV, having produced two episodes of “Ironside” as well as worked on various episodes of “The Sopranos.”
Karyn Kusama has signed on to direct the series. Her previous work includes the under-the-radar film “The Invitation” and last year’s Nicole Kidman-starrer “Destroyer.” Two of the original film writers will also be apart of the series as executive producers as Louis Mellis and David Scinto join the team. The other two executive producers are Familystyle’s Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay.
In a statement, Keith Cox, president of development for Paramount Network and TV Land, said:
“We’re thrilled ‘Sexy Beast’ is joining our robust scripted slate of originals. We were impressed with Michael Caleo’s craft of the prequel, bringing these strong characters back to life for TV audiences, and with the exceptional style Karyn Kusama plans to bring to this series. We’re also honored to team with our sister studio Paramount Television in collaborating on this exciting project.”
Cox will oversee production alongside Lauren Ruggiero, vice president of development at Paramount Network and the show will be produced by both Paramount Network and Anonymous Content.
The show does not have a release date currently as well as no announcements of the cast.
