'Blockers' Director Working With Producers Seth Rogen & Will Ferrell On A New Comedy Described As "'Goonies' For Adults"

One of last year’s surprise, break-out comedies, “Blockers,” became a box office success and kickstarted the directing career of screenwriter Kay Cannon. Now, for her latest film, she’s re-teaming with Seth Rogen for a new comedy titled, “79ers.”

According to Collider, Cannon has been signed on to direct “79ers,” which tells the story of a group of estranged friends that come together after 20 years to finish a treasure hunt they never completed when they were younger. Cannon is expected to direct the film, which was originally scripted by actor-writer Ben Schwartz and will now be worked on by Dylan Meyer. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are aboard as producers, as well as comedic actor-producer Will Ferrell.

The film is expected to be released by Lionsgate, and the studio executive Nathan Kahane, has a very clear idea of what tone and style “79ers” is going for.

“I hope when we are finished with this film it feels like ‘Goonies’ for adults,” said Kahane. “I have loved this script ever since I first read it. It has such great roles for a group of actors, as our estranged friends have the wisdom and life experience of 30 year-olds, but the baggage of their teen years that they have to overcome as they reunite for a legendary treasure hunt that has eluded them for decades.”

Cannon is best known for her last film, “Blockers,” but before that, she was the writer that is responsible for all three “Pitch Perfect” films, which were obviously massive hits. Previously, it was reported that the director would helm a new version of “Cinderella,” which would star pop star Camila Cabello. However, it’s unclear whether she’ll film that first or work on “79ers.”
