What does it mean to survive? The mere mention of the word conjures up a flurry of possibilities. Netflix’s new limited series “Keep Breathing” tackles two of the most prominent scenarios — humanity vs. nature and the fight against inner demons. Set in the Canadian wilderness, this limited series explores a lone survivor’s struggle to find her way back to civilization.
Maggie Kiley and Rebecca Rodriquez share directing duties on the project. Kiley — who helms the first three episodes — comes from a TV background. Her episodic work includes series such as “Katy Keene,” “Dirty John,” and “Dr. Death.” Rodriquez takes on the second half of the season. No stranger to episodic TV herself, Rodriquez’s directorial credits cover a wide range of popular titles like “Doom Patrol” and “Mayans M.C.”

The project stars Melissa Barrera as skillful survivor Liv. It’s a pivotal role that plays on the actress’ strengths, something she expertly showed off in 2022’s “Scream.” The Playlist’s Marya E. Gates wrote “…she’s given plenty of emotions to work with and particularly excels in the sisterly scenes,” as part of the film’s review. Barrera will also be seen in the franchise’s next offering, tentatively titled “Scream 6.” ‘Breathing’ also stars Jeff Wilbusch, Austin Stowell, Juan Pablo Espinosa, and Florencia Lozano.
The limited series’ official synopsis:
“After her private plane crashes in the remote Canadian frontier, lone survivor and New York lawyer, Liv (Melissa Barrera), must battle both an unforgiving wilderness and past personal traumas to stay alive.”
A battle for survival takes on many forms in “Keep Breathing.” The project — from executive producers Martin Gero, Brendan Gall, and Maggie Kiley — debuts on July 28 on Netflix. Get your first look at the trailer below:
