When Paul Newman passed away in 2008, Robert Redford had been working on “A Walk In The Woods” (which he’d later make with Nick Nolte) as a potential project to make with his longtime friend. Another vehicle the duo had kicked the tires on was crime pic, “Highwaymen,” and it’s been percolating in development for years. Back in 2013, Woody Harrelson and Liam Neeson were eyed as the new leads, but, while Neeson has exited, another name is coming aboard.

Deadline reveals that Kevin Costner is in early discussions along with Harrelson to make this movie happen over at Netflix. John Lee Hancock (“The Founder,” “Saving Mr. Banks,” “The Blind Side“) is still attached to direct, and has rewritten the original script by John Fusco (“Marco Polo,” “The Babe,” “Young Guns“) which tells the story of the lawmen — Frank Hamer and Manny Gault — who brought Bonnie and Clyde to justice. It should be noted, Hancock also wrote Clint Eastwood‘s underrated “A Perfect World,” which starred Costner, so I’d imagine that’s one reason why the actor is interested.
So, pretty cool concept, but, for this to happen, Netflix needs to legally untangle the project from Universal. Hopefully there will be no hiccups because this sounds like one worth keeping an eye on.
