Kevin Feige Explains Why 'Spider-Man: Far From Home' Is Essential Viewing After 'Avengers: Endgame'

For months, “Avengers: Endgame” was billed as the “culmination” of almost two dozen films and 11 years worth of storytelling in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And as the $2.75 billion box office has proven, the film serves as a pretty great ending for a story that began all the way back in 2008. But according to Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios president and the man responsible for millions of grown adults sobbing over superhero tragedy, the real end of the Infinity Saga is the new ‘Spider-Man’ film.

Speaking to Comicbook.com, Feige explained why he feels like “Spider-Man: Far From Home” is the true end of the Infinity Saga, and thus Phase 3, of the MCU. And while you may chalk this up to marketing speak, the superstar producer does make a fairly convincing argument why fans of ‘Endgame’ should be lining up for Spidey’s latest adventure.

“We’ve been working for many years on ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ and ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home,’” Feige said. “Those were the films that were culminating the entire Infinity Saga of the MCU. And as we were working on ‘Endgame’ we realized that the true end of the entire Infinity Saga, the final film of Phase 3, had to be ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home,’ because — spoiler — we lose Tony Stark at the end of “Endgame.’”

He continued, “The relationship between Peter Parker and Tony Stark is so special over the five films that Tom Holland has portrayed Spider-Man in the MCU, that we needed to see where his journey went, and see how does Spider-Man step out of the shadow of his mentor, Tony Stark, and become the true hero that he was always meant to be. And it’s for that reason that ‘Endgame’ and ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ are essentially two pieces of the same story, and it’s not over yet until ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home.’”

Basically, if you’re hoping to schedule a true ‘Avengers’ double feature with ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame,’ it should really be a triple-feature with ‘Far From Home’ as the epilogue, of sorts. This sort of comment is sure to upset some of those folks that dislike how interconnected the films of the MCU have become in recent years, with the basic understanding that you have to watch 22 films before you can even attempt to understand the bigger picture. However, as a comic book fan, the idea of epilogues finishing stories in other series is nothing new. In fact, this is commonplace.

Yes, ‘Endgame’ provides a great conclusion and for many, there’s no real need to see the story fleshed out. But if you, like myself and many others, thought one of the most emotional moments of the finale was when Peter came up to a dying Tony Stark and said, “We won Mr. Stark…” (just typing it brings it all rushing back…I’m such a nerd) then you’re likely going to want to see the young teen deal with the deal of his latest father figure. (Boy, that kid really can’t count on grown many lasting very long, huh?)

“Spider-Man: Far From Home” arrives in theaters on July 2.
