‘Kingsman 3’: Matthew Vaughn Knows How The Film Will Begin & End But Isn’t Sure About Act 2

“The Kingsman” franchise is an interesting one. The first film shocked a lot of people and became a bit of a hit for filmmaker Matthew Vaughn. The sequel, though filled with even more stars, didn’t resonate as well with fans and critics. But still, it was pretty popular. Then came “The King’s Man,” a prequel film that came and went without really making a blip on anyone’s radar. All that to say, the franchise seems to be declining in popularity, but that isn’t stopping Vaughn from continuing with the story, teasing what’s to come with “Kingsman 3.”

Speaking to Collider, Matthew Vaughn was asked about the status of “The Kingsman 3.” For years now, the film has been in development and would serve as the finale for both Colin Firth and Taron Egerton, the two leads that kicked everything off with the spy comedy film series. But really, we don’t know much about what the film will actually look like. And it appears Vaughn is still kinda figuring it out himself.

“So ‘Kingsman 3,’ we’ve got to get on with before Colin [Firth] is way too old and dare I say it, Taron’s [Egerton] getting on as well,” said Vaughn. “So, ‘Kingsman 3’ is definitely the conclusion of their relationship. Act one is being written. Act three is being written. Act Two needs some work, right? And so we know how it ends, we know how it begins.”

Though you could argue that the beginning and end of a story is crucial in development, it really does sound like the meat of “Kingsman 3” is still quite up in the air. It definitely doesn’t feel like there’s this story that is compelling Vaughn and Co. to continue the franchise. Obviously, that’s just conjecture, but still. 

“The Kingsman” franchise follows the story of the title characters, a group of secret spies who have their hands in just about every major political move in the world. In the films, Firth and Egerton have this sweet master/apprentice relationship that served as the emotional throughline in the first two movies. Clearly, that’s the exciting part for Vaughn, who knows how he wants to end things with those two characters. But really, they just have to figure out what world-ending disaster the Kingsman group has to overcome. 

Clearly, it’s far too early to know when we might see a release date for “The Kingsman 3.”
