She’s won a Golden Globe and she’s won nine Grammy Awards, but today Lady Gaga became an Academy Award winner. The pop music icon won the Best Original Song Oscar for “Shallow” from “A Star is Born.” She was also nominated for Best Actress in Bradley Cooper’s Best Picture nominee.
Gaga co-wrote “Shallow” alongside fellow winners Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando & Andrew Wyatt. She joins a recent trend of pop star winners this decade in this category including Adele (“Skyfall” in 2013), John Legend (“Glory” in 2015) and Sam Smith (“Writing’s on the Wall” in 2016).

One of the biggest music hits of 2018, “Shallow” hit no. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. and no. 1 in 18 countries around the world. It was certified platinum in the United States with over 1 million units sold. It was the featured single on the “A Star is Born” soundtrack which hit no. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 200 chart and has sold over 2 million units worldwide.
The 32-year-old New York native was previously nominated in this category in 2016 for the song “Til It Happens To You” from the documentary “The Hunting Ground.” She co-wrote the track with Diane Warren who was also nominated this year for “I’ll Fight” from “RBG.”
As for those tracking Lady Gaga’s EGOT ascendence, she is still missing out on the Emmy having been nominated three times without a win. As with most EGOT winners landing the Tony Award will be her most difficult challenge. Considering the highs and lows of her career so far, no one should put it past her.
