Welcome to my latest call to action to get everyone who hasn’t seen the Safdie Brothers’ “Good Time” to go watch it. Actually, this is really an update about the writing/director duo’s latest film, “Uncut Gems,” which is finally to start to come together, with an exciting addition to the cast and an international distributor.
First, and foremost, we have to talk about how the Safdie Brothers have hit it out of the park, yet again, with another exciting casting announcement for “Uncut Gems.” In addition to Adam Sandler, returning to drama work, and Eric Bogosian and Judd Hirsh, we can now add Lakeith Stanfield to the mix, according to Deadline. In the film, Sandler plays a jewelry store owner that has a gambling addiction, increasing debts, and two relationships. Stanfield will play an ally to a famous client of Sandler’s jewelry store.
By this point, you are probably well aware of the recent acting accomplishments of Stanfield. Not only was he a standout, despite his relatively minor role, in “Get Out,” but he also recently starred in the Boots Riley breakout film, “Sorry to Bother You.” These film roles are in addition to his incredible work on Donald Glover’s FX hit “Atlanta.” Oh, and he will have a role in the upcoming “The Girl in the Spider’s Web.”
Adding to the excitement is the news that Netflix has come aboard the project as the international distributor of “Uncut Gems.” The streaming service has been making a name for itself lately as not only the premier spot for some of the biggest film and TV projects but also as a distributor of indie films. A24 will handle the domestic release, as the studio did for the previous Safdie Brothers film, “Good Time” (go see it!). But Netflix will release the film to the global audience soon after.
Still no word on a release date for “Uncut Gems,” but the report says that filming should commence later this year, with more casting announcements forthcoming.
