While other movies in the Pixar stable may have earned more money theatrically, “Cars” is far and away the biggest merchandise money generator for the animation house, with the franchise generating billions of dollars worth of sales of licensed goods. So “Cars 3” was simply an inevitability, because you don’t keep that kind of money maker in the garage for too long.
Owen Wilson‘s Lightning McQueen is back in action, and facing a new foe in Jackson Storm. So McQueen will get a little bit of help from Cruz Ramirez, a new coach that will try and and give him from racing tips to win the day.
“Lightning McQueen, he’s awesome. We’ve got some great new characters, some great racing in it. It’s a very emotional story. It’s a little bit more akin to ‘Cars 1,’ where you get into a deep emotion with him,” John Lasseter told EW about the film, while tipping his hat the late Paul Newman who voiced Doc Hudson in the original movie. “It’s really a special story. It’s very emotional and his relationship with Doc Hudson, and his memory of Doc Hudson.”
“Cars 3” opens on June 16, 2017.
