Limited Series Emmys 2022 Predictions And Contenders

If you thought the Drama and Comedy Series races were insane, boy do we have news for you. The Emmys are about to be hit with the most competitive Limited Series field in history. In fact, there are so many contenders dropping before the May 31st deadline we’re scratching our heads wondering why some networks aren’t pushing these projects to an August or early Fall release. We have 32 candidates listed battling for just five nominations. Granted, it’s not too late for the Television Academy to expand it to 7 or 8 nominees, but considering the bloodbath this field has been for the past few years we’re not convinced they will make a move.

Taking all that into account, in theory, there are two locks, “Dopesick,” which dominated the guild season, and “The Dropout,” which has become the most buzzworthy player among the contenders. “Maid” deservedly made a splash last fall and no one should discount the Netflix effect this season. 2021’s summer surprise “The White Lotus” earned key guild nominations, but couldn’t breakthrough with any of them (we thought Mike White would at least take a WGA honor, but lost out to Brad Inglesby and “Mare of Easttown” instead). It’s likely, but could it be snubbed? Oh, you bet.

The remaining players feature critical standouts such as “Station Eleven,” “The Girl from Plainville,” “PIstol,” “Scenes from A Marriage” and “A Very British Scandal” or popular fare like “Inventing Anna,” “Pam and Tommy,” “Moon Knight,” “The Thing About Pam” and “Midnight Mass.” Then there are the other two start-up scandal series with star-filled casts, “WeCrashed” and “Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber.” And were you aware Julia Roberts and Sean Penn are starring in “Gaslit”? All you need to do is remember the mantra for 2022, “Too much content.” [Posted April 8]
