There are many pieces that come together to make David Lowery‘s “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints” one of the most memorable films of the year so far. From its finely modulated tone that tilts between foreboding and yearning, to a blend of pitch perfect performances from the cast including Rooney Mara, Casey Affleck, Ben Foster, Nate Parker and Keith Carradine, this slow burn tale of two separated lovers on a collision course with both their future and past is a striking piece of work. But one other element that helps seal it all together is the score by Daniel Hart.
A relatively new kid on the block—his previous composing credit was providing the music for Lowery’s previous feature “St. Nick,” while he also has the rom-com “Save the Date” and the Neil LaBute-penned “Some Girl(s)” on his CV—he arrives with ‘Saints’ confident and assured. His work in the film perfectly weaves with the actors and the mood and tenor Lowery evokes overall, adding a lovely, moving texture to the film. And no further evidence is needed beyond this exclusive track, “Ruth And Sylvie,” which beautifully displays the kind of work heard throughout the movie.
