Star Wars Celebration is in full swing in London. Yesterday, we got some big updates about new films from James Mangold, Dave Filoni, and Daisy Ridley‘s return as Rey for the upcoming movie helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (“Ms. Marvel“). In the midst of all that, there was a little bit of shock that some previously announced films weren’t getting discussed during the Lucasfilm panel. However, we got a brief rundown of the status of a handful of “Star Wars” live-action projects straight from studio head Kathleen Kennedy.
While speaking with Variety, Kennedy reveals that filmmaker Taika Waititi (“Thor: Raganork“) is still involved with his own “Star Wars” film, but is still writing the script. Some fans had been worried that Waititi’s project could have been killed after it wasn’t brought-up during the Lucasfilm panel yesterday, Kennedy saying they’re hopeful to get it made “one day.”
“Taika is still working away. He’s writing the script himself. He doesn’t really want to bring others into that process and I don’t blame him. He has a very, very unique voice. So we want to protect that and that’s what he’s doing. But we’re going to make that one day,” the studio head stated at Star Wars Celebration.
There was also a brief mentioning of Rian Johnson‘s (“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”) trilogy as Kennedy gave the impression that he’s keen to return but currently busy with his Benoit Blanc franchise at Netflix. That lucrative deal with the streaming giant includes one more film to follow-up the whodunnit events from “Knives Out” and “Glass Onion.”
When asked about the status of a second season of Ewan McGregor‘s “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” Kennedy was quick to say it wasn’t in “active development,” but added the optimistic sentiment, “never say never.”
“We’ll turn our attention to that again maybe down the road,” Kennedy told Variety.
Some of the other “Star Wars” tidbits from Star Wars Celebration is that the animated anthology series “Tales of The Jedi” is getting a second season. Another nifty bit of information includes that The High Republic series, “The Acolyte,” will feature established Jedi Vernestra Rwoth played by Rebecca Henderson (“Russian Doll,” “Westworld“) with a first-look photo (see below) and current Chewbacca actor Joonas Suotamo (“Solo: A Star Wars Story“) playing a Wookie Jedi Master named Kelnacca.
