Mark Ruffalo is developing a new superpower for his upcoming HBO limited series “I Know This Much Is True” — the ability to clone himself. Well, to be honest, all that will be done with movie-magic, but it’s true, Ruffalo will star as twin brothers in the upcoming drama series coming to the cable network, according to THR.
“I Know This Much Is True” is based on the Wally Lamb best-selling novel of the same name and tells the story of identical twin brothers dealing with the drama of mental illness, betrayal, struggling marriages, and much more. The series is being written and directed by Derek Cianfrance, who is best known for his film work on projects “Blue Valentine,” “The Place Beyond the Pines,” and “The Light Between Oceans.”
As alluded to earlier, Ruffalo is probably best known right now for his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, such as the recent “Avengers: Infinity War,” as Dr. Bruce Banner, aka the incredible Hulk. However, as readers of The Playlist are no doubt familiar with, the actor has been nominated for three Academy Awards for films “The Kids Are All Right,” “Foxcatcher,” and “Spotlight.” This isn’t Ruffalo’s first foray in the world of HBO, either. He also was in the acclaimed HBO film “The Normal Heart.”
“I Know This Much Is True” is the latest example of HBO’s renewed interest in original programming, as the network attempts to keep pace with streaming services like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu. Recent interviews and reports suggest that the premium network is focusing on more series and films to help round out its schedule, but won’t spend nearly as much as the big streaming competition. As the AT&T CEO recently said (the telecom company purchased HBO’s parent company, WB), the network is aiming to be the Tiffany to Netflix’s Walmart.

No release date has been set for “I Know This Much Is True,” but Ruffalo has just finished work on his latest ‘Avengers’ film, so it looks like he might have some free time on his hands.
