According to Variety, Christopher Nolan has a new film in the works through Universal with a 2026 release date. To add to the intrigue, it appears that Matt Damon is the filmmaker’s choice to lead the cast. And yes, this film will be shot with IMAX cameras, as we’ve come to expect from Nolan.
While plot details are being kept under wraps, insider Borys Kit posted on social media that sources told him that the film is a father-son story. Take that for what it’s worth. It’s highly unlikely that this is a family drama or something along those lines. Nolan likes spectacle.
This isn’t the first time that Nolan and Damon have teamed up. The actor has already appeared in two of Nolan’s films, “Interstellar” and the aforementioned “Oppenheimer.” Though, it must be said, those are much smaller roles than what it sounds like he’s signed on for here.
As mentioned, Nolan really hit a homerun with “Oppenheimer,” his first film through Universal. That movie was a box office beast and an awards season darling. That’s not an easy task for any filmmaker, but Noland made it look easy. He’s probably the only filmmaker who can take a story like “Oppenheimer” and make it a must-see event film.
Filming for his new project is expected to begin in early 2025, with a July 17, 2026 release date being eyed.
