Earlier this week, “House Of The Dragon” star Milly Alcock landed the role of Supergirl in James Gunn and Peter Safran‘s new and improved DCU reboot. And the actress will star in a standalone film based around the superhero, which …still lacks a director? Strange stuff for the rebooted franchise to do according to “Argylle” director Matthew Vaughn, who’s a fan of Alcock’s but not of Gunn and Safran casting her so early into a film’s development.

Vaughn recently appeared on BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast and expressed interest in possibly directing “Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow,” but he was slightly perplexed about the approach of casting her before a director was on board. “I’m a huge fan of Milly Alcock. Huge fan,” said the director. “Met with her for this other project we’re working on — she turned me down, which was sad. She’s a fabulous actress. Then again, I do find it very weird that they haven’t got a director. That surprised me, because you shouldn’t cast a movie — the director should be casting the movie. I don’t understand who cast it if there isn’t a director.”
This backward approach is indeed strange, but it’s worked for Marvel in the past (“Black Panther,” seemingly “Blade“). Still, one has to wonder if directors will tolerate it for DC. And no one really knows what the DCU is right now in terms of vision and overall quality. “Superman: Legacy” kicks things off for the franchise’s first chapter, “Gods And Monsters,” but outside of announced titles for film and TV, there’s next to nothing fans know about the new franchise.
But here’s a likely possibility: maybe Alcock’s Supergirl will show up in a cameo role in “Superman: Legacy”? There’s already a bunch of minor superheroes cast in the upcoming film in secondary roles, so it’s not a farfetched idea. Stay tuned for whether Alcock shows up in Gunn’s film or not. As for Vaughn, his latest film “Argylle” hits theaters everywhere today.
